Applications from 1 Kings

The Story: 1 Kings 4:1-19

Here in the first section of chapter 4 we see a list of Solomon’s organization of his Kingdom.

We are told who are the priests, secretaries, recorder, leaders of defense, and even those given to run Solomon’s home and servants. We notice some familiar names on this list:

  • Benaiah and Zadok as commander and priest–we remember them from chapters 1-2 and see they are rewarded for their support of Solomon during the upheaval.
  • Abiathar remains priest despite supporting Adonijah.  You will remember we pointed out that even the King could not take priesthood away.  It was a God given position.
  • Nathan’s sons Azariah and Zabud are given places.  No doubt due to Nathan’s role in Solomon becoming king.

Finally we see that Solomon appoints 12 governors to assist in the running of the nation. This is necessary due to Israel’s size: Solomon intends to rule ALL the area God promised to Abraham.  (Moses desired, Joshua defeated, David dominated; now Solomon will develop).  These were also necessary due to the fact Solomon was ambitious to accomplish more than just ruling the nation.

The Application:

Solomon had a big job to do.

It is evident how large an undertaking this is by the amount of organization is required to make it all happen.

Do you remember Solomon’s mentality? 1 Kings 3:7 And now, O LORD my God, thou hast made thy servant king instead of David my father: and I am but a little child: I know not how to go out or come in. Solomon said, “Lord, I am inexperienced and do not know what to do!” “I don’t know how to accomplish all you have set before me to do.”

Have you ever felt this way? Have you ever prayed, “Lord, we need _____!” “I don’t know how to _____…” What is it that you have before you that you are unsure of how to accomplish?

Solomon had a big job to do.

  • First he trusted in God to give him wisdom.
  • Second, he was very organized.
  • Third, he relied on others to help.
