Applications from 1 Kings

The Story: 1 Kings 7:13-51

Chapter 7 concludes with Solomon putting some finishing touches on his palace and the temple. In verse 13 Hiram is being brought in to work with brass. He covers many items in brass and builds some things; especially two large posts to go on the porch of the temple. He makes a large pool full of water and even carts to haul the water around to fill this and other vessels. Finally, we see where Solomon brings in all the items David had stored away for the temple once it was built.

The Application:

Satisfaction, 1 Kings 7:13-22

Hiram builds two posts and when he is finished he is so satisfied with the work that he gives them names. Now, I give names to all my cars! However, I don’t think I have ever named a structure that I have built. Hiram has done something so great here that it deserves to be named!

“The name Jachin, which does not appear prominently elsewhere in Scripture, means “he establishes.” “Boaz (“by him he is mighty”) is David’s grandfather, so this pillar most likely refers in some way to the Davidic dynasty.”

Different authors give different ideas of the representation of the names here:

  • “Keil believes they symbolize the strength and stability of the kingdom of God in Israel.”
  • “Gray suggests they “may symbolize the presence and permanence of Yahweh and the king.”
  • “Jones combines these two ideas, for he argues that the pillars “symbolized the covenant between God and his people, and especially between him and the Davidic dynasty.”

“He shall establish…in strength.” For you and I the purpose of the naming is not as relevant as is the simple fact that something was done so well for God that it was named and remembered even until today! These posts have no doubt been torn down. However, we still know of them and the name they were given.

You and I should do what we do, especially for God, in such a way that when complete we could stand back and give it a name!

Are you satisfied with the work you are doing for God? Why? Rushed, Underfunded, etc…

Work on something until you reach that place of satisfaction.
