Applications from 1 Kings

The Story: 1 Kings 10:1-14

In this passage the Queen of Sheba hears of Solomon’s fame and comes to visit him. Ancient Sheba is accepted as being located in southern Arabia. It is estimated to be 1500 miles away.

Having heard of Solomon’s wisdom she decides to come and test him. This was somewhat common at this time between diplomats. Solomon answered all of her riddles.

She admits that initially she didn’t believe all she heard. Now, she realizes it was all true and even more than she heard. She is so overwhelmed with the greatness of Solomon and all he has built that it takes her breath away! Once gifts were exchanged she returned to her country.

God had done something great in Israel through Solomon.

The Application:

Give Him Glory

When God does something great…people will hear, they will come to see, we should use this time to point people to Him.  God does great things for His glory.

After seeing all of Solomon’s greatness, in v.9 the Queen recognizes his God. Uniquely, Solomon never brought up God, she had to.  Solomon is busy showing all that he had accomplished and built.  He uses his wisdom to impress the Queen.  Sadly, in the grandeur of things, he forgets God made it all possible.

No matter how great Solomon and his kingdom were, there was something greater. Jesus said in Matthew 12 that a greater than Solomon was here.  All God had given Solomon was to be used to point people back to God.

Learn this in your own life.  God will bless and help which gives us reason to show off all He has done.  Be careful to always use these things to point people back to God.
