What was Adonijah’s motivation? Did he want to be a great leader helping the nation? Did he want to serve the remainder of his life with thoughts towards others rather than self? Did he just want something he couldn’t have? Did he just want to rule and have power? We can’t know his mind, but his actions point us to think he just wanted the rule…to have the power of a King.
Jesus gives us the exact opposite example: Matthew 20:28, "Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many."
You and I can see that the best motivation is to be able to serve others rather than rule over them. Don’t be bossy. I purposely put that as a “bossy” command! It is easy to do…especially when in charge. Rather, lead softly by example.
Never be motivated by power. As Christian’s our motivation should be to show others the Love of Christ as shown to us. Power corrupts. Try to be self-less. This is a toughie. I think of it in terms of “yes’s” and “no’s”. No’s when I am being selfish. Yes’s when I am being self-less.
