I wanted to play basketball in high school.  Really. I did…until I went to that first practice.  Of course, it was absolutely nothing like middle school park and rec. ball where you practiced for an hour and played a game on Saturday.  High school ball was a different ball game (no pun intended, of course).  That first practice after we stretched and dribbled the ball for a few moments, the coach instructed us to run ten laps around the gym holding a basketball over our heads.  The first lap (well, maybe the first half lap) wasn’t too bad, but then came the burn.  I thought my arms might fall off before I made it around for that final lap.  Needless to say, I chose to take the position of the ‘statistician’ of the team.

I said all of that to say that holding my arms up for a long period of time was rather difficult; but in today’s passage, we read about everlasting arms that are holding us.  Our focus verse states that “The eternal God is our refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms” (Deut. 33:27a).  So not only is God a place (or the One) to whom we can run, but he is also upholding us with His everlasting arms.  God has provided a double layer of protection for us, and His everlasting arms will never grow weak.  They will never burn with pain caused by the loads that He will bear for us. Sometimes we face trials and circumstances that are bigger than we are.  But they are never bigger than Christ.  He can hide you in the “shadow of His wings” and he will hold you in His everlasting arms.  Those arms are holding you, and can lift you above your circumstances.  They can lift you and carry you through the deepest waters that alone you cannot cross. Just for today, trust that His everlasting arms are holding you.

Deut. 32-34 Focus Verse: 33:26-27
